Published 2026-03-21 · Memphis visits Charlotte, aims to end road losing streak

The Memphis Grizzlies are dragging a five-game road losing streak into Charlotte tonight, and frankly, it feels a lot longer. They haven't won away from FedExForum since February 28th, a 101-99 squeaker against the Timberwolves where Ja Morant dropped 37 points. Morant, of course, isn't walking through that door anytime soon. This team is a shell of what it was, limping to a 24-45 record, firmly entrenched in the Western Conference basement.

Real talk: Memphis needs a miracle just to be competitive, let alone snap this skid. They're missing Desmond Bane, Marcus Smart, and Brandon Clarke, alongside Morant. That’s four starters out, basically. Jaren Jackson Jr. is still doing his thing, averaging 22.3 points and 5.6 rebounds, but he can't carry this entire load every night. He had 28 points against the Thunder on Wednesday, but it wasn't enough in a 118-112 loss. The Grizzlies are giving up 113.1 points per game on the road, and their offense is sputtering at 106.6 points during this losing stretch. That's a bad combination against anybody, let alone a Hornets team that's actually playing pretty well.

Charlotte's Playoff Push is Real

The Hornets, on the other hand, are making a real push for the play-in tournament. They're 36-34, sitting 10th in the East, and they've won six of their last ten. LaMelo Ball is the engine, averaging 23.9 points, 8.0 assists, and 6.1 rebounds. He's a problem, especially for a depleted Grizzlies backcourt that's been scrambling all year. Terry Rozier has been hot, too, pouring in 23.3 points per contest in March, including a 34-point effort against the Mavericks last week. Gordon Hayward adds another veteran presence, though his scoring has dipped a bit lately.

Thing is, the Hornets aren't just relying on their stars. They're getting solid contributions from guys like P.J. Washington and Mark Williams. Williams has been a beast on the boards, grabbing 10.3 rebounds per game since the All-Star break. Charlotte's defense, while not elite, is certainly better than what Memphis has been facing. They held the Raptors to 97 points just two nights ago. That kind of effort will suffocate a Grizzlies team that struggles to generate consistent offense without its primary playmakers. Memphis has only broken 100 points once in their last five road games, a 106-96 loss to the Blazers.

The Grizzlies' Young Guys Need to Step Up

Look, it's not all doom and gloom for Memphis. This season has been about development, whether they wanted it to be or not. Guys like Vince Williams Jr. have gotten extended run, and GG Jackson has shown flashes. Jackson scored 20 points against the Thunder, showing he can put the ball in the hoop. But consistency is the issue for these young players. They'll have a big moment, then disappear for a few possessions. That's fine for development, but it doesn't win you games on the road against a team fighting for their playoff lives.

Here's my hot take: Jaren Jackson Jr. is going to have a monster game tonight, maybe 35 points and 10 boards. He knows he has to. But it still won't be enough. The Hornets are too cohesive, too motivated, and too healthy. Charlotte is going to win this one by double digits, further cementing their hold on that play-in spot. And the Grizzlies' road losing streak? Yeah, that's hitting six.
