Offensive rating measures how many points a team scores per 100 possessions. It strips away pace — a fast team and a slow team can be compared fairly. Here are the most efficient offenses in the NBA this season and what makes them tick.

1. Boston Celtics — 119.8 ORtg

The Celtics have the best offense in the NBA for the third straight year. Their system is built on spacing — all five players on the court can shoot threes, which creates driving lanes and open looks. Tatum and Brown are the primary creators, but the supporting cast (Derrick White, Kristaps Porzingis, Jrue Holiday) are all elite shooters who can punish defenses for helping.

Boston's three-point volume is historic. They attempt 42 threes per game and make 16.8 of them (40%). When they're hitting, their offense is virtually unstoppable because there's no weak link to exploit.

2. Indiana Pacers — 118.4 ORtg

The Pacers play the fastest pace in the league and generate easy baskets in transition. Tyrese Haliburton's passing creates open shots before the defense can set up. Their half-court offense is built around ball movement — the Pacers average 28.4 assists per game, the most in the league.

3. Denver Nuggets — 117.9 ORtg

The Jokic effect. Denver's offense revolves around Jokic's passing from the center position. He draws double teams and finds open shooters with passes that no other center in history could make. The Nuggets' offensive rating with Jokic on the court is 122.4; with him off, it drops to 108.1. That 14-point gap is the largest in the league.

4. OKC Thunder — 117.2 ORtg

The Thunder's offense is built around SGA's midrange game and the spacing provided by their shooters. SGA creates shots for himself and others with his elite footwork and change of pace. The Thunder also have one of the best offensive rebounding rates in the league, which gives them extra possessions.

5. Cleveland Cavaliers — 116.8 ORtg

The Cavaliers have the most balanced offense in the top 5. Mitchell scores from everywhere, Mobley and Allen dominate the paint, and Darius Garland provides secondary playmaking. Their half-court offense is methodical and efficient — they don't turn the ball over, and they get good shots every possession.

The trend

NBA offenses are more efficient than ever. The league-average offensive rating this season is 113.2, the highest in history. Three-point shooting, spacing, and pace have combined to create an era of offensive basketball that would have been unimaginable 20 years ago.
