Heat's Zone Defense: A Familiar Foe for Philly

Here’s the thing: everyone knows Erik Spoelstra is going to throw that zone defense at the Sixers. It’s a staple. Look, the Heat ran it against them in the 2022 playoffs, and Joel Embiid struggled to find consistent looks from the elbow. That series, Embiid shot just 42.9% from the field. And frankly, the zone is even more effective now with Bam Adebayo’s improved activity at the top, forcing uncomfortable passes and disrupting entry points.

Thing is, the Sixers have gotten better at attacking it. Tyrese Maxey’s burst off the dribble creates those gaps, drawing defenders and opening up kick-out opportunities. During their last matchup on April 4th, Maxey had 37 points, often slashing against a collapsing zone. But it’s not just about Maxey. The key will be Tobias Harris’s decision-making in the short corner, whether to shoot or make the extra pass to Georges Niang on the wing. If he hesitates, the whole possession grinds to a halt.

Nurse's Counter: Mid-Range Maestro Embiid

Nick Nurse knows this zone inside and out. He’s seen it a thousand times. His counter isn't going to be some revolutionary scheme, but rather a focus on what Embiid does best: the mid-range. When Miami goes zone, they often concede that elbow extended area, daring teams to take those shots. Embiid is a master there. He shot 49.3% from 10-16 feet this season, which is elite for a big man.

Real talk: if Embiid can consistently hit those 15-footers, the zone breaks. It forces Adebayo to step out, opening up the paint for Maxey’s drives or cutting action from Kelly Oubre Jr. against a scrambling defense. The Sixers can't just rely on three-pointers. They'll need to attack the soft spots, force rotations, and then punish the closeouts. It’s all about creating chaos in a structured defense.

My bold prediction? Embiid drops 40 points, all coming from within 18 feet, and the Sixers win by double-digits.
